Aberford News Update

Aberford news

Ernest Pawson:
It was with great sadness we heard of the death of Ernest, long time verger at St Ricarius. Ernest was a willing and cheerful helper at the church for many years and he will be greatly missed. His willingness and help for the clergy and towards the smooth running of services was a feature of ministry at St Ricarius. His sense of humour was always refreshing. We have all benefited from knowing Ernest. Our condolences to Diane.

Parish Council: The next meeting will be held on Tuesday February 21 at 7.30pm in the School Hall. Parishioners welcome to attend.

St Ricarius: The Sunday services at 11am will be taken on February 19 by the Rev Richard Humphris and on February 26 by the Rev B Harris. All welcome.

Sunday School: This month's meeting will be held on Sunday February 19 straight after the morning service at 11am. All welcome.

Primary School: In his first report for the year, Bob Young, Head Teacher, advises that Christmas was once again an extremely busy time in school. Firstly came the concert with 2 performances playing to packed audiences in the church. The children had lots of new songs to learn, which they did with enthusiasm. Parents once again did us proud when it came to producing the costumes. Parties were held in school with Santa visiting Classes 1 and 2. The usual carol singing around the village was a great success with a record number of parents and children taking part. The collection raised £91 for the RNLI - our chosen charity this year. Finally the children made Christingle oranges in school and these were taken along to the Christingle Service in church, which again was enjoyable and well attended. As to the New Year, Class 1's topic will be about ‘Homes’ which includes homes around the world and of course animal homes. Class 2's topic is ‘India. They will be comparing life in a village in that country and life in a village called Aberford. Class 3 will be looking at Hinduism to begin with and then studying Britain since 1945. Class 4 will study Africa, looking closely at Zambia and the geography of the continent, with artefacts ordered from the Museum Service.

Millennium Club: Winning numbers in the Christmas Draw were No.33 £100, No.71 £50 and No.79 £25. January's winners were No.91 £20, No.53 £10 and No.57 £5.Beaver Scouts: A new Beaver Colony is being set up in Aberford starting in April.
